The title of Fencing Master is the highest level of accreditation by the USFCA and by the International Academy of Arms. Masters are capable of teaching fencers from beginners to high-level competitive champions. Masters can also train other coaches to become Prevots or Masters as well as any level student on how to fence.
This certification requires passing the Prévôt written exam and then a written thesis and a comprehensive practical and oral examination given by a certified board of three USFCA fencing masters. A coach can be certified as a Master in an individual weapon (e.g. Master of Foil, Master of Saber), or can be certified in all three weapons (Master of Arms or Maître d'Armes). Each weapon is tested separately.
The French terms for the certification are also used. The title of Fencing Master, or Master of Arms, in French is "Maître d'Arms." The single weapon Fencing Master is denoted with the title "Maître d'Escrime," followed by "Fleuret" (Foil), "Epee" or "Sabre." So a Master of Foil is, in French, a "Maître d'Escrime Fleuret."
